The Gottman Method of Couples Therapy, developed by the renowned Dr. John Gottman. This method focuses on what makes a healthy relationship last, how couples can become better friends, manage conflict, and best create ways to support one other’s hopes and  dreams. Through research-based interventions and exercises, this structured, goal-oriented and scientifically-based therapy is based upon empirical data from Dr. Gottman’s study of more than 3,000 couples.

It is a simple, straight forward nuts and bolts approach that creates a path for increased respect, affection & closeness. It teaches couples how to keep conflict discussions calm and helps them break through and resolve conflict when stuck.

There are four parts to the therapy:

The history of your relationship, areas of concern and treatment goals are discussed. You then met individually with the therapist to give you each a chance to share thoughts, feelings and perceptions, and to clear the mind. Lastly, treatment recommendations are shared.

You will usually be seen together although individual sessions may be recommended. You may also be given practice exercises between sessions. Along the way, your satisfaction and progress are evaluated.   

Phasing Out
Sessions are less frequent so you may test your new relationship skills and prepare for termination of therapy.

​It is helpful to have one session where progress is summarized and the remaining work is defined.
