Massage

Therapeutic massage is the skillful and scientific application of touch to the soft tissues of the body with roots in both Western and Eastern cultures. It is utilized as an adjunct to medical treatments and in the promotion of health and wellness. A massage session enhances the function of joints and muscles, improves circulation and body tone, and relieves mental and physical fatigue. Pain and stress effects are relieved and replaced with balanced energy and vitality. This is possible because nervous, muscular, visceral, circulatory digestive, and facial systems are all affected.
Because of the special abilities and extensive training of the massage therapists at the Health and Harmony Center, we can offer you several different and effective types of massage treatments. These include Swedish, Deep Tissue/Neuromuscular, Craniosacral, Esalen, Kinesio Taping, Lymphatic Drainage Therapy, Reflexology, and Raindrop Therapy. Our massage establishment number is MM002694.
In general, these treatments can provide the client with the following benefits: 1. Enhancement of joint and muscle function. 2. Improvement of circulation digestion and general body tone. 3. Relief from physical, mental, and emotional pain and fatigue. 4. Promotion of relaxation and inner peace. Most treatments last 60 minutes. Some require 90 minutes, and others only 30 minutes.
The benefits from these sessions can be felt during the first treatment. We recommend one treatment per month as a minimum. With more frequency, massage does provide greater long-term benefits.
In addition, we offer chair massage, house calls, insurance billing, and speakers for meetings, conferences and luncheons.
The following are brief descriptions of the wide variety of touch modalities offered at the Center.

Healing Art of Massage Therapy

Swedish Massage

The basic relaxing massage in which all licensed massage therapists are trained. Using long strokes, squeezing and kneading, the therapist improves circulation, works on the superficial layers of muscles to relax them and to improve their range of motion.

Deep Tissue/NeuromuscularTherapy

Deep Tissue is the “hurts so good” technique. It is intended to relieve chronic tensions and muscle spasm, restoring structural integrity. The therapist uses firm strokes and deep sustained finger pressure to work well into the contracted muscle and tendons. It inhibits stress/tension/pain cycle.

Reflexology

Works with the more than 7000 nerve endings in each foot and hand, thus it has a profound effect on the whole body and the whole person. Since the foot and hand are considered mirrors of the body at large, manipulation of specific points on those body maps has a healthful effect on the corresponding body system. The client may remain fully clothed for this treatment.

Raindrop Therapy

Aromatherapy utilizes nine essential oils, some individual and some blends. The oils are layered one at a time onto the client’s back with light, repetitive strokes; the feet and lower legs also receive several of the oils. It is designed to bring the body into structural and electrical alignment. Only therapeutic grade oils are used.

Esalen

Unique in that personal attention is the cornerstone of the technique, as well as no specific time limit. Long lengthening strokes, the gentle rolling of deep muscle layers, and soothing rocking bring the mind, body and spirit into perfect harmony. This equilibrium, as well as the meditative “letting go” of receiving such caring touch, make Esalen a truly nurturing and personally rewarding experience.

Kripalu, Trigger Point and Ayurvedic

Kinesio Taping

A new and effective method of pain management. KT is used to treat all kinds of musculo-skeletal pain, nagging aches and pains, and muscles that act up during a workout. KT is applied over muscles to relax and support them on a 24 hour a day basis. Kinesion Tex is an extremely high quality elastic tape worn on the skin for an extended period of 3-5 days without irritation. The four major benefits are: Muscle Function, Joint Function, Lymphatic Function, and Skin Function. Cost: $25.

Healing Art of Touch Therapy-

Fee: $ 85 for 60 min. treatments

Lymph Drainage Therapy

Enhances the proper functioning of the lymphatic system, which is critical to our body’s ability to drain fluids, detoxify, regenerate tissues, filter out toxins, and maintain a healthy immune system. The results include reduction in edemas of many origins; relief of chronic inflammation such as sinusitis, acne, eczema, allergies; reduction in symptoms of chronic fatique and fibromyalgia; and deep relaxation to aid insomnia, depression, stress, loss of vitality and loss of memory.

Cranial Sacral Therapy – (CST)

A light-touch approach that accesses and treats the craniosacral system---the soft tissues and fluid that protect your brain and spinal cord---producing a profound impact on your central nervous system; allowing it to release deep tensions in the body, relieving pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance.

Unwiding Meridians:
Applying Acupuncture Principles to CranioSacral Therapy

Utilizing the rhythm of the craniosacral system with the pathways and patterns of acupuncture adds another dimension to your treatment protocol.  This includes using the subtle electrical energies of the meridians and specific acupuncture points to open blockages without needles.

Infant and Pediatric Craniosacral

A specialized form of Craniosacral Therapy, which soothes your baby and offers more than comfort and relief. Childbirth is a shock for the child and has potential long-term effects. This gentle form of compassionate touch can help avoid or improve such conditions as colic, torticollis, chronic ear infections, dyslexia, hyperkinetic behavior, spasticity.

Ayurveda

About Ayurveda

According to the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda (translation: science of life), there exist dynamic principles that govern our body, mind and consciousness. Those same principles permeate the entire creation. These are: space, air, fire, water and earth. Of those five elements, air, fire and water are the most dynamic.

Ayurveda recognizes three constitutions (doshas) based on these principles:

Vata dosha represents air and space.

Pitta dosha represents fire as well as water.

Kapha dosha represents water and earth.

All the elements are present in every individual but their specific combination and proportion varies from person to person. At the time of conception, the proportion and particular combination of Vata, Pitta and Kapha is determined. This is called prakruti and it does not usually change during our lifetime.

The state of our constitution in the moment is called vikruti. At some point or another, due to stress, poor lifestyle habit and so on, imbalances set in. We move away from our nature and as a result we experience discomfort in the system. The aim of Ayurveda is to bring back that balance. When there is balance, health flourishes. Bringing balance assists us in experiencing our full potential.

There are many ways to restore balance. Proper food and exercise for our constitution, healthy lifestyle habits, relaxation and meditation are some of the most important ones.

The use of this Balancing Bowl is a wonderful complement in helping the system move towards balance.

 PROPERTIES OF THE BALANCING BOWL:

The Balancing Bowl is made up of mainly three metals that have specific properties in balancing the subtle energies in the system.

Brass balances Vata.

Silver balances Pitta.

Copper balances Kapha.

Using the bowl is also very relaxing and beneficial for the eyes.

HOW TO USE THE BALANCING BOWL:

Start by applying oil generously to the foot.  There needs to be a sufficient amount so that the bowl can glide effortlessly on the surface of the foot. You will feel a slight suction between the foot and the bowl created by the oil.

Use the curved surface of the bowl to do the massage.

Although this massage is not done with pressure, keep as much of the bowl in contact with the foot at all times.

Place the bowl on the sole of the foot and start circling it slowly in a clockwise direction.
The movement is done mainly with the wrist. The bowl does not lay flat on the surface of the foot while doing the circles but wobbles with the circular movement of the wrist.

Do slow clockwise circles on the whole surface of the sole of the foot. Move slowly. Do not try to cover too much distance too quickly.

Continue on the sides of the foot, on each side of the ankles and on the top of the foot.

Do 4 small clockwise circles on the very tip of each toe, starting with the big toe (press the toe down with your finger and keep it there while doing the 4 circles. Doing it this way will avoid the bowl from touching the other toes).

Finish by spending some more time on the bottom of the foot.

To end, slide the bowl towards the toes and off the foot.

Repeat on the other foot.

NOTES:

If the heel of the foot is not easily accessible with the bowl, you may support the foot by placing your hand under the heel, lifting it slightly and creating enough room for you to maneuver. I suggest doing this at the beginning of the massage and letting go of the foot when you are done. In doing so, the client will not be distracted by the supporting hand while feeling the subtle touch of the bowl.

CARING FOR YOUR BOWL:

Traditionally the bowl is cleansed by rubbing it with ash and rinsing it under water. The bowl can also be “re-energized” by rubbing it over damp grass to pick up earth energy and rinsed again under fresh cold water.

Instead of ash you can use plain clay mixed into a paste and rinse it under fresh cold water. For better hygiene between clients, you can wipe the bowl with pure tea tree oil.
We sometimes use some mild, pure soap to wash the bowl and then use tea tree oil.

It is important that the bowl be well rinsed and dried before storing.

Marma Points

MARMA THERAPY-SHANKARA FACIAL

The first three positions are positions that use the whole hands, as opposed to a single finger point.  At each point, close your eyes and focus.  Hold the first these positions one minute and 30 seconds for all others.

1)    Head Cradle- Both hands are placed under the head, cradling the head. Hands are relaxed, weightless on the table; head is weightless in the hands. Therapist centers his/herself here, letting go of any exterior pulls on his/her attention, letting go also any thoughts or emotions arising from the past or the future, centering completely in the present moment with the client. Close your eyes and focus. Hold for one minute.

2)
Thumbs Over Third Eye- Both thumbs are placed side by side and laid ever-so-gently on the client’s face so that the thumb tips are lightly touching the client’s third-eye (center forehead).  Allow the remaining four fingers to spread over the sides of the client’s head resting gently.  Focus your attention where the thumbs are positioned.   Close you eyes and focus.  Hold for one minute.

3)
Fire Fingers Over Crown and Thrid Eye- Both hands are made into Adi Mudra, the famous mudra as seen often on the Buddha’s hands or on a yogi’s hands, where the thumb and forefinger are gently touching, and the rest of the three fingers are uniformly pointing outwards. But here is a variation – With the same adi mudra, now fold the fourth and fifth fingers into the crease of the palm. What is left is the thumb and forefingers still touching, the fourth and fifth fingers folded into the palms, and the third fingers (fire finger) pointing straight out. Maintaining this mudra (hand position) with both hands, the left hand is placed over the forehead. The right hand is placed behind the back of the client’s head with the fire finger pointing directly toward the crown of the head, (fontanelle, or soft spot on the top of the head). Very light contact is made. Close your eyes and focus. Hold for one minute.

4)
Index Finger, Points A, B, C, D – The following four points are harmonized using the index finger traditionally of the right hand, though the left may be used if this is more comfortable for the therapist. A clockwise circular motion is made by simply making very light contact with the tip of the index finger and then gently rotating in a microscopic circle on each point for 30 seconds for each of the four points.
4A Where the top part of the head meets the back part of the head; 4B Top of the head (the crown or the fontanelle); 4C Top center of the forehead, typically just above the hairline, though with receding hair it can be just below the hairline;
4D Third-eye point.  Close your eyes and focus at each point.

5)
Inner Orbital Eye Area- Placing both index fingers at the top center of the forehead/hairline, very lightly slide down towards the eyebrows to the inner orbital notches (the indentation directly under the inner brows)   First locate the point, then holding the point with some pressure, pull both fingers up and  towards you so that the fingers which are holding the points come to the top of the eyebrow ridge. Close your eyes and focus.  Hold for 30 seconds.

6)
Sides of Nose- Using the tips of the index fingers just above the nostrils, on the sides of the nose where the nose meets the face are the two nasal sinus points.
Close your eyes and focus. Hold for 30 seconds.

7)    Base of Nostrils- Using the outside tips of the thumbs (you may need to roll the thumbs slightly) beneath the outermost curve of each nostril lie the points to be harmonized. Close your eyes and focus.  Hold for 30 seconds.

8)    Upper Lip- Using the tip of the right index finger place at the center of the upper lip in the indentation spot directly below the nose.  This point is where the gum meets the two front teeth but actually is behind the teeth, so visualize or feel for the point.
Use moderate pressure.  Close your eyes and focus.  Hold for 30 seconds.

9)    Center Chin- Using the tip of the right index finger go to the center of the chin directly in the crease of the chin.  Close your eyes and focus.  Hold lightly for 30 seconds.

10)  Top of Cheeks- Using the tips of both index fingers positioned at the top of the cheeks directly under the eyes are two facial marma points.  As a guide, imagine centering directly below the pupil of the eyes and at the highest point of the cheeks.
Your fingers may brush your client’s eyelashes which is okay.  Close your eyes and focus.  Hold for 30 seconds.

11)  Outer Eyes- Using the tips of the index fingers, at the outer corners of each eye bring the fingers out slightly towards the temples and then follow the eyebrows down to where they would meet the outer corners of the eyes ultimately meeting just below the temples.  Close your eyes and focus.  Hold for 30 seconds.

12)    Upper Ears – Using the index fingers where the upper the ears meet the face.  Slide out toward the cheeks and slightly down you will find a flat spot approximately ½ inch from where in ear meets the face.  Close your eyes and focus.  Hold for 30 seconds.

13)    Lower EarsSame as above, using the index fingers where the lower ears meet the face.  Again slide out towards the jaw and slightly upward you will find another flat spot.  Close your eyes and focus.  Hold for 30 seconds.

Notes: Marma points by ancient definition are the points where energy becomes matter in the human body. They form the most basic energy system in the body. They comprise in essence, the body’s fundamental immune system. They are the subtlest energy corridors in the body, the easiest to get blocked, and the easiest to unblock. Simply one’s own attention, or the attention of another, especially aided by touch, can easily unblock the marma points, and liberate a great amount of energy into a person’s being and body. Marma points are direct connections to the space that is within each of us. Subtlest of the five elements that compose our bodies is the element of space, which pervades throughout. If a person has experienced the expansion of the space element in them, through meditation or deep relaxation, one knows the blissful feeling associated with it.  Marma points when stimulated and harmonized, open the space in the body, and expand the mind also.  Knowing this, the therapist should be very mindful (with their attention), and silent. This mindfulness and this silence will only further enhance the effects of the simple hand positions on the correct points and the person on the table will undoubtedly benefit. Rarely do individuals have the opportunity given to them to have a glimpse of their empty silent nature. Few things give as much rest in so short a time. This is a very beautiful technique.

Health & Harmony Center is offering three Ayurveda treatments, including aromatherapy, and the Ayurveda skin care, Shankara. The treatments include Foot Care with the Balancing Bowl, Head Marma, and Shirodara and are done with awareness and silence. These are very relaxing, subtle and yet powerful, and encourage clients to open and experience a greater sense of space.

Testimonials

Aug. 10, 2007

Hi Kandy...

I so enjoyed being with all of you in your studio today. Scott Helm's massage and cranial work was the best I've ever had. He didn't just push hard on muscles as some therapists do. He deliberately and skillfully worked on the subtle body and energy which made all of the difference. He is obviously a well trained, well educated and gifted healer. My sincere thanks to him for giving me much needed relief today.

Dear Kandy & Scott,
Thank you for participating in this two-day, fun-filled event. We greatly appreciate your help in making our benefit fair a success. Many of our employees are new to the area and this fair is one way of informing our employees about services available to them in Lee and Collier counties.

Thank you for your donation for our employee drawing. We are so glad you could support us again this year. I have enclosed a list of donations and winners for your enjoyment. THANK YOU!

Thanks, Kandy. I was just thinking about you as I was doing my practice. I am enjoying my backbender and Buddha that I bought while with you last week. Truly, Scott worked wonders with my head and neck and shoulders. I am still pain free for the first time in four months! Please pass the word to him. I am using the still point inducer that I got from you as well.

Best Regards,
Shelley Starbuck
